During the summer Jane Fordham ran a series of practical workshops for young people here at Fabrica.
Each of the workshops explored a different aspect of drawing and they took place in the gallery, alongside (and sometimes beneath) Monika Grzymala’s installation Raumzeichnung: Reflection, which the artist describes as a ‘spatial drawing’.
Here are some photos of the session on 11th August, which focused on figure drawing. The group worked from a model, trying out different ways of working including drawing without looking at the drawing itself – this is a good way of loosening up and can produce some surprising and exciting results!
Below is one of the drawings made during the session – I think the twisted standing figure on the left is fantastic, it really captures the feeling of a body turning. The seated figure is also really well observed, the sense of a twisted torso is conveyed superbly.
After working on individual drawings the group transferred to a large piece of paper on the floor, to create a collaborative drawing. Sometimes people’s work overlapped to create strange hybrid figures, and people could also wipe out marks with brooms covered with soft cloths.
I love these two bird’s-eye-view photos of the final drawing…
Many thanks to Fabrica volunteers Jane and Vanessa who helped during the session and took these photos, which capture a sense of the afternoon’s work.
